About Cedar Whisper
Four free calculators for people who heat with wood: how much wood is in a stack, how much heat a species holds, how long it takes to season and roughly what size of stove a space needs.
How it works
Every calculation runs in your browser as you type. Nothing you enter is sent to a server; the woodpile log on the seasoning page is kept in your browser's local storage and you can export or clear it at any time.
Where the numbers come from
Each page lists its sources: the NIST Handbook 130 definition of a cord, heat values from Utah State University Extension and the Missouri Department of Conservation, cord contents from University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension, drying advice from the US EPA and University of Maryland Extension, and stove guidance from the EPA and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Where we had to fill a gap with our own rule of thumb (the seasoning multipliers and the heat-loss rates on the stove page), the page says so.
What it is not
These are estimates for planning and for comparing offers. They are not a heat-loss survey, a legal measurement or installation advice. Wood stoves and chimneys should be installed by a qualified professional, and every home with a stove needs a working carbon monoxide alarm.
Cedar Whisper is an independent hobby site. It sells nothing, takes no advertising and has no affiliation with any wood seller or stove maker. See the privacy page for exactly what happens to data.
